After the Franco-Prussian War, he collected taxes on dark roads and wanted a brave, smart dog to walk beside him. In the 1890s in Apolda, he mixed shepherds, pinschers, and hounds until he got it: a sleek black-and-tan dog that was fast, loyal, and fearless.

Fifty years later, America needed that same courage.

On November 24, 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps started the War Dog Program. They didn't want just guard dogs — they wanted a living radar. The Doberman Pinscher became the star. About 75% of all Marine war dogs were Dobermans, and 1,047 dogs enlisted in all.

Training was tough — 14 weeks of explosions, jungle noise, and learning to obey only a whisper. A boy and his dog ate together, slept together, and learned to trust each other more than anyone else.

Then they shipped out.

• Bougainville, 1943: Doberman Andy ran 1,500 yards ahead of Marines down the muddy Piva Trail and silently pointed out hidden Japanese positions. No patrol with a dog was ever ambushed there. • Guam, July 1944: During the giant banzai attack, 65-pound Doberman Kurt sniffed the air and went stiff. Seconds later, 5,000 enemy soldiers charged. Kurt was hit by mortar fire while warning his platoon. His handler, PFC Allen Jacobson, refused help until Kurt was carried back. Kurt died in the arms of the vet that night. • Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa: Dogs named Chips, Butch, Fritz, and Prince carried messages, found wounded Marines, let men sleep in foxholes, and sniffed out snipers in trees and caves. Handler after handler said the same thing: "A lot of times they were killed instead of us."

By war's end, 29 Marine dogs were killed in action — 25 of them on Guam alone. In 1994, the Marines dedicated a bronze statue on Guam called "Always Faithful." It was modeled on Kurt, and the base lists every dog's name: Kurt, Skipper, Blitz, Cappy, and more.

They weren't pets.
